CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION: Students will learn voice over technique. Collect effective commercial, promo, cartoon and narration scripts and what it entails to produce a nationally marketable voice over demo.
PRE-REQUISITES: Basic speech and acting skills.
COURSE RATIONALE:
• The ability to recognize the industry standard voice over CD through research.
• The ability to create a product that will assist in the actors marketability to agents, advertising companies etc.,
• The challenge and business of self promotion and up to date marketing techniques; including website, CD and personal logo and art.
• Performers need to develop tangible skills and a workable process of marketing, which can lead to a more practice avenue of earning.
MATERIALS:
Students will be expected to bring in a notebook and copy/script ideas, scripts typed with two copies. And to be ready to record in every class. Comfortable clothing is suggested. Tape recording classes is not permitted.
OBJECTIVES:
To effectively perform a wide range of characters vocally and repeat this as requested.
To obtain techniques of relaxation, concentration and cold reading skills.
To effectively obtain auditioning techniques.
To create a nationally marketable voice over CD
To explore and implement techniques in marketing.
COURSE DESIGN:
• Students listen to and research voice over websites, national talent agency websites and talent CDs.
• Students collect and create voice over copy.
• Students record copy.
• Students learn relaxation technique, listening technique, microphone technique, pickup and matching technique.
• In-class rehearsal.
• How to effectively take direction in a recording studio setting.
• Industry etiquette.
• Audition technique.
• Student can distinguish Broadcast, Narration, Promo and Character Demos.
ATTENDANCE:
You are permitted two absences.
Any absence after two will lower your final grade one letter.
Two late arrivals are considered an absence.
Home work and projects are lowered one grade for each day they are late.
You are responsible for all assignments and notes from missed classes.
GRADING:
10%: copy/script choice.
20%: class participation
20% research and reparation
50% Performance
Because the nature of voice over is based on individual performance, students will be given one on one instruction while in the recording studio. Youll have the opportunity to re-work scripts as your facility increases.
A- 91-100. Reserved for superb work including: finding and creating engaging copy, understanding and implementing vocal techniques, following instruction, participating creatively and insightfully with fellow class mates. Demonstrating a superior ear and vocal range.
B- 91-90. Good work including: finding and creating engaging copy, understanding vocal techniques, following instruction, participating with fellow class mates. Demonstrating a good ear and vocal range.
C- 71-80. Standard work including: Some trouble finding and creating engaging copy, understanding and implementing vocal techniques. Some problem following instruction, participating with fellow students. Vocal range is habitual.
D- 61-70 Sub-standard due to: Lack of interest. Lack of clarity. Lack of effort. Poor use of language skills and listening techniques. Unwilling to take direction. Unwilling to participate effectively with fellow students. Vocal range is habitual.
So much of voice over depends on strengthening the imagination and on the actors ability to concentrate while in a relaxed state. Your creativity depends on the success of this class. Suggestions and input is welcome from you.
